Summer Update - An Cathaoirleach, Cllr Jim Gildea
I am honoured to have been elected as Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council. I am committed to working tirelessly for the residents of the County and addressing key issues such as accessibility, economic development, and sustainability. As I begin my term, I want to recognise the many exciting initiatives and milestones that the Council has recently achieved, which demonstrate our ongoing dedication to enhancing the quality of life for all in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown.
We recently marked 30 years of the Primary School Arts Programme, a wonderful initiative inspiring creativity in our young people. The launch of the Scéal Trail has brought a new interactive experience to families, encouraging outdoor exploration and literacy. In support of our commitment to sustainability, we hosted a number of events during Dublin Climate Action Week – a collaboration with the three other Dublin local authorities showcasing important environmental projects across the region.
Significant progress is also underway with the signing of the contract for the design team on the National Watersports Campus project in Dún Laoghaire Harbour which is a major investment in sport and community infrastructure.
In addition, we launched the new Sports and Physical Activity Plan aiming to promote greater participation and access to sport for all ages. Environmental stewardship continues with the recent raising of the Blue Flag at Seapoint and Killiney Beaches, recognising the excellent water quality and facilities.
Community spirit was also celebrated through popular events such as the Dalkey Vintage Car Festival and the Marlay 50 Celebrations, marking 50 years of Marlay Park in public ownership.
As Cathaoirleach, I am focused on ensuring that the needs of all residents—especially persons with disabilities and older people—are met. I will also champion local businesses and promote energy conservation across Council buildings.
I look forward to working with my fellow Councillors and the community to build a more inclusive, sustainable, and vibrant Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown.
