Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council recently hosted a Rediscovery Centre Repair Workshop focusing on textiles and furniture at the dlr LexIcon Library as part of Dublin Climate Action Week.

The hands-on workshop provided members of the public with the opportunity to learn practical repair skills, helping to extend the life of household items and reduce waste. Participants were guided by experts from the Rediscovery Centre, Ireland’s national centre for the circular economy, who demonstrated effective techniques for repairing textiles and furniture, including fabric mending and basic furniture restoration.

The event supported Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council’s ongoing commitment to climate action, sustainability, and waste reduction. By promoting repair and reuse, the workshop highlighted the important role that communities play in reducing carbon emissions and supporting a circular economy.

Dublin Climate Action Week brought together a programme of events across the city and county aimed at raising awareness of climate change while empowering individuals, communities, and organisations to take positive, practical climate action. The Rediscovery Centre workshop aligned with the week’s focus on accessible actions that can be adopted in everyday life.

The workshop was open to the public and welcomed participants of all skill levels, with many attendees bringing along small textile or furniture items for repair.

Speaking at the event, Roger Warburton, Programme Director of the Rediscovery Centre said:

“Repair and reuse sit at the heart of the circular economy. By keeping products and materials in use for longer, we can significantly reduce waste, conserve resources, and lower carbon emissions. Workshops like this empower people with the skills and confidence to make circular choices in their everyday lives.”
