Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council in collaboration with Balsam Hill, a leading artificial reusable Christmas tree company, is proud to announce the launch of its groundbreaking recycling scheme for artificial Christmas trees for this festive season. Project reTREE is part of Balsam Hill’s global sustainability initiative to shift towards more sustainable materials and sustainable systems.

From 15 November 2025 to 31 January 2026, householders can bring their old or broken artificial Christmas trees—including pre-lit trees with light strings attached—to Ballyogan Recycling Centre. All artificial trees, regardless of brand, will be accepted free of charge. As a token of appreciation for supporting the circular economy, Balsam Hill will offer a 10% discount voucher for any purchase on their website to the first 100 customers who recycle an artificial tree. Vouchers are valid until 31 January 2026.

Speaking at the launch, An Cathaoirleach Cllr. Jim Gildea said:

“Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is delighted to be able to facilitate its residents to give artificial reusable Christmas trees that have reached end-of-life, an opportunity to recycle them. Working with local stakeholders, Balsam Hill will ship these trees to France to be shredded for recycling and continue exploring the best way to make new artificial trees from old ones. This pilot supports our vision for Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown to become a circular county.”

Mac Harman, founder and CEO of Balsam Brands highlighted:

“It’s easy to make things, it’s hard to unmake or remake things. At Balsam Hill we are excited to explore and build meaningful and innovative circular solutions that support our customers, and anyone else who wants to recycle reusable Christmas trees when they finally reach their end of life, after many years of joyful celebration.”

Project reTREE partners in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown also includes waste recycling services provider Thorntons and WEEE Ireland.
