A Message from Cathaoirleach Cllr Barry Saul
I am honoured to have been elected as Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, and I look forward to representing our communities over the coming year. This is an important time for our county, with a number of significant capital projects under way that will enhance quality of life and support sustainable growth. These include the new public library in Stillorgan, opening later this year, which will provide a modern, welcoming space for learning, creativity and community connection. Alongside this, the delivery of new affordable and social homes will help more people access secure, high-quality housing.
The County Development Plan continues to guide how we grow and develop dlr in a balanced and sustainable way. Through this plan, land will be rezoned to support housing delivery, while ensuring that infrastructure, services and community needs are carefully considered. The Sandyford Urban Framework Plan is a key example of this forward planning in action, setting out a clear vision to transform the area into a more connected, vibrant and liveable urban district, while supporting enterprise and employment
I am also pleased to see progress on key community and recreational projects. Phase 2 of the multi-sport campus at St. Thomas’ Fields is advancing this year in partnership with Dundrum South Dublin Athletics Club and local resident clubs, providing modern and inclusive facilities to support active lifestyles. The delivery of new and upgraded recreational facilities continues across the county, enhancing opportunities for sport and community use. A modular sports pavilion is being installed in Cabinteely Park, with its official opening planned for later this year, alongside the new pitches and padel facilities at Loughlinstown Leisure Centre. At Marlay Park, works are underway on a new cricket crease and outfield, along with a storage unit, improvements to the model railway line, upgraded paths and additional tree planting, all progressing this summer.
Meanwhile, the Moreen area will see the refurbishment and installation of a dedicated Teen Zone, due for completion by year end. Phase 2 of the Samuel Beckett Civic Campus represents a major investment in community wellbeing and will enhance opportunities for health, wellbeing and community life for current and future generations, with its swimming pools, sports facilities and shared civic spaces. This project is currently at detailed design stage, with construction due to commence early next year. As Cathaoirleach, I am committed to working with Councillors, Council staff and local communities to build an inclusive, sustainable county and a great place to live, work and visit.
