Irish Men’s Sheds National Conference to Focus on Men’s Mental Health

The Irish Men’s Shed Association (IMSA) will host its annual national conference in Dún Laoghaire for the first time on Wednesday, 19 November 2025, at the Royal Marine Hotel, Dún Laoghaire. The event is expected to welcome over 300 Men’s Shed members from across Ireland, gathering under the powerful theme ofBecoming Men – Mental Health and Wellbeing in Men’s Sheds’

Recognising the individuality of experience each Man has in a Shed and the unique qualities of each Shed, IMSA sees its role as providing scaffolding for an environment where Men can continue to explore their personal journey as Men, ‘shoulder to shoulder’, supported by peers and enhanced through creative projects, collaborative programmes and initiatives with cross sector multi-disciplinary partners. ‘Becoming’ reflects the experiences Men from all backgrounds might have in their Shed – the potential to become different versions of themselves as ‘Shedders’ and the unique opportunity to share this journey with others.

Cllr Jim Gildea, An Cathaoirleach, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council highlighted:

“We’re proud to welcome the Men’s Shed National Conference to Dún Laoghaire for the first time. This gathering shines a light on the vital role Men’s Sheds play in supporting mental health and community connection across Ireland. Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is committed to fostering inclusive spaces where people of all ages can thrive, and we’re delighted to support this important event.”

The conference was officially launched at the dlr LexIcon, where Frank Curran, Chief Executive of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, An Cathaoirleach Jim Gildea, and Mary Ruane, Senior Executive Officer from the Community Department, joined IMSA representatives Ben Dolan and Rebecca McLaughlin, along with local Loughlinstown, Ballybrack, and Shankill (LBS) ‘shedders’, to extend a heartfelt céad míle fáilte to attendees. The Community Department at Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council plays a key role in supporting Men’s Sheds across the county through a combination of funding, coordination, and community engagement initiatives. As part of this commitment, the department is also providing financial support for the National Conference, reinforcing its dedication to fostering inclusive, supportive spaces that promote mental health and wellbeing.

The IMSA is the national representative body for over 500 Men’s Sheds across the island of Ireland, including Northern Ireland, where they currently support 62 affiliated sheds. Sheds are connectors and enablers in society. Men’s Sheds support and enable other groups within their communities; Tidy Towns, Schools, Sports and Youth Clubs all benefit from the activities and efforts of Irish shedders. IMSA advocates for all sheds and works collaboratively with stakeholders to support and grow this vital grassroots movement.

Enda Egan, CEO of the Irish Men’s Sheds Association, said:

“We are very happy to bring the National Conference to Dun Laoghaire this year. The Dun Laoghaire Rathdown area is home to some of the most active Men’s Sheds in the country and this event allows us to strengthen the connections between sheds, while showcasing the activities and Health and Wellbeing programmes which take place in Sheds to a new audience.”

The conference will be live streamed on the IMSA website at www.menssheds.ie
