Cllr. Jim Gildea, Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council, officially opened Eurofound at 50, a major exhibition celebrating the 50th anniversary of Eurofound this week at dlr LexIcon, Dún Laoghaire. Established in 1975 and based in Loughlinstown, Eurofound is the only EU agency located in Ireland. For five decades, it has provided research and evidence to inform better social, employment, and work-related policies across the European Union. Its work has shaped understanding of working conditions, quality of life, labour markets, and wider social developments throughout Europe.

Speaking ahead of the launch, Cllr. Jim Gildea, Cathaoirleach, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council highlighted the importance of celebrating the strong and longstanding relationship between Eurofound and the local community:

“Eurofound has been part of the life of this county for half a century, and its presence has shaped how our community connects with wider European social and economic issues. What stands out to me is how their research consistently comes back to real people: how we work, how we live, and how communities can thrive. This exhibition brings those ideas into the heart of the LexIcon in a way that feels meaningful and tangible. It shows the value of having an organisation of European significance rooted here in Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown, contributing to local life while influencing policy far beyond our borders. I’m very pleased that residents, students and visitors will have the chance to explore that story up close”.

This exhibition brings that the agency’s work to life for local audiences, connecting Eurofound’s long-standing presence in the county with the everyday experiences of communities, students and visitors. Through visual displays and accessible storytelling, Eurofound at 50 highlights how research contributes to policy discussions and improvements across the EU.

Frank Curran, Chief Executive of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council noted:

“Eurofound has been an important part of the social and economic fabric of Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown for many years, and we are delighted to host their exhibition. The agency’s presence in our county reflects our strong commitment to community wellbeing, learning and public engagement.”

Ivailo Kalfin, Eurofound’s Executive Director added:

Eurofound’s 50th anniversary marks a significant milestone for the agency – not only as an opportunity to reflect on our history, but also to look ahead and engage with the emerging challenges facing Europe’s citizens today. Although our offices in Loughlinstown are rooted in Ireland, our work and ambitions remain firmly focused on Europe's future."
