Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Musician-in-Residence 2023 Simon Morgan in Concert
The third of three musicians to take up residency as part of this year’s dlr Musicians-in-Residence Scheme, Simon Morgan, will present a concert of work developed during his residency this October.
Singer and composer Morgan is one of Ireland’s finest high baritones, a graduate of University College Dublin, The Royal Irish Academy of Music and The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
An Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Denis O’Callaghan, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, said:
“Simon’s collaboration with Drazen Derek and Richie Buckley will be a fantastic opportunity to hear these excellent musicians perform in the surroundings of the dlr LexIcon Studio.”
During his residency Simon is collaborating with guitarist Drazen Derek and saxophonist Richie Buckley to develop material drawing on jazz and traditional Irish influences for the soon to be relaunched Café Orchestra musical collective.
Simon will be joined on stage by several members of the collective for the performance to celebrate the end of his residency at dlr LexIcon’s Studio space on Thursday 5 October at 7pm.
Frank Curran, Chief Executive of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council said:
“The County Council continues to provide support to musicians in the County through this Residency Programme. We are very proud of the wealth of talent in DLR.”
Now in its 9th year, the dlr Musicians-in-Residence Scheme provides musicians with space and time to create new work, develop their skills, collaborate with others and showcase their music. Each residency provides an artist with funding, a dedicated space to work in and mentoring to support their career development.
Simon is the recipient of one of two residencies for established musicians awarded in 2023 – the second, violinist Lidia Jewloszewicz-Clarke, completed her residency in July. The scheme also provided a further residency for emerging guitarist Chris Comhaill in May.
Sharon Rollston, CEO of Music Network commented:
“It’s a pleasure to work with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council once again on the management of this annual scheme. These residencies provide valuable time and resources for the appointed musicians to develop their artistic practice and advance their careers, and we very much look forward to hearing this exciting new work of Simon’s on 5th October.”
The Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council Musicians-in-Residence Scheme is jointly funded by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and the Arts Council and is managed by Music Network.
