dlr LexIcon and Cultural Centre celebrates 10 years as Ireland’s busiest public library
dlr LexIcon and Cultural Centre has reached a remarkable milestone—its 10th anniversary! Officially opened on 17th April 2015, the venue has welcomed nearly four million visitors, cementing its status as the busiest public library in Ireland.
To mark the occasion, a special event was held last week, bringing together families, including children who, like dlr LexIcon, also turned 10 in April. The birthday celebrations included a lovely moment where children born in April—just like dlr LexIcon—were gifted a book.
Reflecting on the library’s journey, An Cathaoirleach Cllr Jim O’Leary acknowledged its transformation over the years:
"When dlr LexIcon was first proposed it was met with opposition and controversy, however since it opened ten years ago, through the dedication and support of everyone involved, it has become a resounding success. dlr LexIcon is now a cornerstone of our community, providing a welcoming space for all."
Frank Curran, Chief Executive of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council added:
“dlr LexIcon over the last ten years has issued nearly 2.5 million items, ranging from books to DVD, from graphic novels to audio books, hosted some 7,600 events, catering to a wide range of interests and age groups. As we look to the next ten years, we are committed to continuing the mission of dlr Libraries to connect and empower people, inspire ideas and support community potential.”
The festivities concluded with an engaging storytelling session with Paddy Donnelly, delighting families and guests alike and of course there was cake and a rousing rendition of ‘Happy Birthday dlr LexIcon’.
