Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council (dlr) is pleased to announce the signing of the construction contract for the Beckett Link Road, Phase 1 in Cherrywood. The contract was signed with Jons Civil Engineering – John Cradock JV Ltd., the contractor appointed to carry out the works. Construction is set to commence in the coming weeks and is scheduled to take 18 months to complete.

The Beckett Link Road project is funded through the Government’s Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF) programme which aims to deliver more compact and sustainable development, as envisaged under Project Ireland 2040. The project also benefitted from some initial funding through the National Transport Authority (NTA) for the design stage.

It is a key piece of infrastructure within the Cherrywood Strategic Development Zone (SDZ) and will provide a vital 1.6km connection between Cherrywood Avenue and Bishop Street with a new underpass under the R118/Wyattville Link Road. Once completed, the road will enhance connectivity within the area, support sustainable travel, and facilitate the continued development of Cherrywood as a vibrant, well-connected urban new town.

Speaking at the contract signing, Cllr. Jim Gildea, Cathaoirleach, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council said:

“The Beckett Link Road is a significant milestone for Cherrywood and for the wider County. This new connection will not only improve accessibility for our new town of Cherrywood, but it will also support the delivery of homes, schools, and community facilities. It’s a key step in building a thriving, sustainable community in Cherrywood, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have for residents and businesses alike.”

Frank Curran, Chief Executive of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, added:

Cherrywood stands as the most significant strategic development zone in the country, to support 10,500 new homes and a population of c.26,000 and 22,0000 workers. The Beckett Link Road project exemplifies effective collaboration between numerous state agencies and private stakeholders. It strategically enhances future utility investment, advances climate action goals, and delivers essential public infrastructure to support Cherrywood’s sustainable growth and ongoing development.

James Browne, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage said:

Today’s contract signing for the Beckett Link Road marks a transformative moment for the future of Cherrywood. The provision of almost €35m from the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF) for this project will not just support the delivery of over 10,000 badly-needed homes in Cherrywood but will deliver essential services and facilities, including the extension of the walking and cycling network. Through its support for this, and over 400 other URDF projects across the State, the Government is underlining its commitment to the delivery of critical infrastructure that will enable the building of homes and the regeneration of urban communities to become more attractive and vibrant places in which to live, work, visit and invest.”

The Beckett Link Road is being delivered as part of dlr’s ongoing investment in infrastructure to support sustainable communities across the County.
