Ballyogan Operations Centre Solar PV wins All-Ireland Business Award

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is proud to announce that the Ballyogan Operations Centre Solar PV project has won the All-Ireland Business Award at the All-Ireland Entrepreneurs Summit. This prestigious award recognises projects that demonstrate excellence and is part of the larger Business All-Star accreditation, which is a symbol of trust and excellence for Irish businesses.

"We are delighted to receive this prestigious award for the Ballyogan Operations Centre Solar PV project," said Cllr Jim O’Leary, Cathaoirleach, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council. "This recognition is a testament to our dedication to sustainability and our commitment to reducing our environmental impact. We are grateful to the SEAI who have supported us in achieving this milestone."

The project is part of the DLR Retrofitting Programme under the Climate Action Plan, and received 50% funding through the SEAI Pathfinder Programme. The system has already shown significant impact, providing 10,000 kWh of renewable electricity to the grid in just one month. In addition to the Solar PV project, the heating system at Ballyogan Operations Centre has been replaced. A cascade of four air-to-water and one water-to-water heat pump system was commissioned in September, 2024,decarbonised the plantroom, resulting in a 98% reduction in natural gas usage.

John O’Sullivan, Head of Department, Business, Public Sector and Transport at SEAI said:

“SEAI is delighted to support this project with funding, highlighting DLR’s strong commitment to its climate action agenda. Under the Pathfinder programme, we look forward to partnering with the Dublin Local Authorities in the coming years to advance energy efficiency and decarbonisation projects. This funding was provided by the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications (DECC) through SEAI."

A 174kWp Solar P/V system was installed across three project phases comprising of 324 solar panels situated on the rooves of the Administration and Utility Buildings at Ballyogan Operations Centre. The array is projected to generate a combined 165,000 kWh of clean renewable electricity each year. An export licence has been awarded which will allow for surplus generation to be exported to the grid. The Solar P/V system at Ballyogan is on track to provide 10,000kWh of renewable electricity to the grid this month alone. As a result of these energy projects, over 200,000kWh of Natural Gas has been avoided over the past 12 months at Ballyogan and the electrical performance of the facility has improved by 38,586 kWh across the same timeline.
