International Day of Older Persons Events

Friday the 1st of October marks UN International Day of Older Persons and this year the theme of the day is ‘Digital Equity for all Ages’. Events coordinated by the dlr County Council's Age Friendly and Social Inclusion Unit will take place across the county, in person and online, to celebrate ageing and to promote and support digital access for all.

To promote and support ‘Digital Equity for All Ages’, dlr Libraries will launch an ACORN Tablets Lending Scheme on the 1st of October. ACORN tablets are age friendly smart tablets designed with the older person in mind. The ACORN and further digital devices will be made available for loan to the public, nursing homes and day care centers around the County over the coming months. The Scheme is funded under the dlr County Councillors' Local Property Tax Initiatives 2021.

In order to help older people learn about and use Zoom - the very popular online video and meetings app - the dlr Public Participation Network (PPN) will be running an online Beginners Zoom class from 2.00pm-4.00pm with 25 spaces available on Friday the 1st of October.

Other online events include a special Age & Opportunity Energy and Laughter Movements Session, suitable for all ages and levels of mobility to get energised and will run on Facebook at 11a.m.

Southside Partnership DLR will organise an Introduction to Healthy Food Made Easy course, which will be delivered via Zoom from 11am-12.30pm. Participants will enjoy learning great nutritional tips and cooking a simple healthy recipe.

An online Dance Workshop for older men and women will also be provided by Macushla South Dance Club 50+ via Zoom from 11am–11.45am. No previous dance experience is necessary and new members are always welcome!

dlr Arts Office are organising 2 printmaking workshops with artist Tunde Toth that she has devised, especially to celebrate the day. The workshops will run on Zoom from 11am-12.15pm & from 2pm-3.15pm and booking is required. The workshops are aimed at older adults and beginners to print making are welcome.

A 1-hour Hand Reflexology class will also take place on Zoom at 12pm and at 7pm organised by Clinical Reflexology Ireland. Oils and instructions will be provided in the post for participants who register, but places are limited.

DLR Healthy Ireland Senior Wellness Action Programme (SWAP) are also organising a Chair Exercise Taster Session from 2.30pm-3.30pm on Zoom for up to 30 participants.

Among the events taking place in person, to celebrate the day, Dance Theatre Ireland will hold 3 dance performances called ‘Vintage Youth’ in Myrtle Square beside Bloomfield Shopping Centre in Dún Laoghaire at 11.15am; in Moran Park outside the LexIcon Library at 2pm and in Cabinteely Park at 4.30pm beside Cabinteely House, weather permitting.

A Holistic Wellness and Mindfulness morning with music and refreshments will take place in Rosemount Family Resource Centre in Dundrum from 11am-1pm, subject to Government guidelines.

Southside Women’s Action Network (SWAN) are also welcoming women over 55 to come and celebrate the day at NCCWN SWAN, Loughlinstown with a free vintage themed garden lunch and music from 12.30pm-2.30pm.

Story telling by renowned storyteller Jack Lynch will take place in the Studio on the ground floor of dlr LexIcon Library, beside the café from 2.30pm-3.15pm. This will be followed in the Studio by a free music session with ‘Blue Moon’, where the trio will perform an eclectic mix of jazz, ballads and latin songs at 3.30pm. The story telling and music session is open to anyone, but you must register as numbers are limited and vaccination certificates must be shown on entry to both performances.

An Cathaoirleach, Lettie McCarthy will also participate in a commemorative tree planting ceremony on International Day of Older Persons on Friday 1st of October to remember loved ones lost during the COVID-19 pandemic.
