dlr celebrate National Tree Week at Fernhill Park & Gardens

An Cathaoirleach Lettie McCarthy and Ruairi O’Dulaing, Senior Parks Superintendent were on site yesterday in Fernhill Park & Gardens to plant a native Cherry, Prunus avium. It will be a beautiful addition to the collection of unusual and spectacular trees throughout the gardens.

National Tree Week runs from 20th-26th March this year and we have a number of tree planting events countywide taking place with schools.
We anticipate that we will plant an additional hectare of woodland in Fernhill this winter.
dlr’s commitment to tree care, management and increasing a healthy tree population countywide is ongoing and extremely important in light of the current climate crisis.

While trees are celebrated nationally this week, we work continually with our trees all year round. Over this winter we have planted 4,300 trees in the county and maintained our tree population throughout the year.

Also in attendance was Aidan French who is reviewing the dlr Tree Strategy which is almost complete. Further details can be found here.

We also undertook a Tree Tag Project where we evaluated the environmental benefits such as carbon sequestered by particular trees in the community and information posters are attached to these trees, this project will continue to grow.

National Tree Week continues until the 26th March with tree planting throughout the county and within our parks ongoing.

National Tree Week is organized by the Tree Council of Ireland and Coillte and is celebrated to encourage the public to plant, look after and encourage knowledge around trees with a key objective to raise awareness around climate change.
