Update on Reports of Oil Residue Along the Coast
This month, we received reports of oil residue at various locations along the coast, including Killiney Beach and the Dún Laoghaire Baths. Our Beaches Team carried out sweeps of the affected locations, and have continued to do so daily since, removing any material found. To date, all locations have shown only minimal amounts of material.
We remain in ongoing contact with the Irish Coast Guard, who have confirmed that they have had no additional reports of oil on land since the end of December 2025, nor any reports at sea.
On 19 January, we conducted water testing at multiple locations: Blackrock Baths, Seapoint, Sandycove, Coliemore, Dún Laoghaire Baths, Killiney Beach, White Rock, Corbawn Strand, and the Forty Foot. All sites showed typical pH levels, indicating no introduction of new contaminants, and no traces of oil were detected in bathing water samples.
While identifying the exact source of the material is not possible, recent currents and wind patterns suggest that the oil likely originated from the Irish Sea, which aligns with how and where the material has appeared.
We will continue to monitor all locations closely, remove any material found, and liaise with relevant agencies as needed. Signage is in place to advise the public not to approach the material and to outline who to contact if further sightings occur.
