St Brigid’s Bank Holiday Water Safety Appeal

General News
seapoint beach

The Irish Coast Guard, RNLI and Water Safety Ireland are urging the public to check weather and sea conditions before any coastal or water‑based activity this weekend. Strong winds, rough seas and large swells will make coastal areas particularly dangerous.

Storm waters and high tides can cut people off quickly, and waves may reach areas that are normally safe. Edges of coastal paths may also be unstable after recent storms—please keep back from the water.

Year‑round swimming remains popular, but changing wind, waves and cold water increase risks. If conditions look rough or unpredictable, do not enter the water.

If swimming:

  • Water is still cold—use a wetsuit, bright cap and gloves
  • Acclimatise slowly and use a tow float
  • Never swim alone—always have someone watching.

Always check local weather and sea forecasts before heading out.

If you see someone in difficulty on the coast or water, call 112 or 999 and ask for the Coast Guard.

We care about your feedback. Have your say.
