Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, in partnership with local sports clubs, has completed an Active Recreation Hub as part of the Shanganagh Park & Cemetery Masterplan. This development creates new opportunities for sport and physical activity for the entire community in an area that has experienced significant population growth in recent years.

Phase 1 focuses on consolidating existing amenities while delivering new facilities in Shanganagh Park, all while protecting archaeology and habitats and enhancing biodiversity.

The new amenities significantly enhance the park and include a full-sized GAA pitch, a shared cricket and baseball space, a 100m sprint track, a calisthenics area, a 3v3 basketball court, and an agility play trail along an improved access route across the DART line. The works also provide extensive seating, viewing and resting areas, along with new paths throughout the park.

The pitch is now complete and establishing well and the new community sprint track is open to the public, along with improved access paths over the DART line and the play trail. Other facilities are progressing well and are expected to open for community use in the coming weeks.

Speaking at the completion of Phase 1 works, An Cathaoirleach, Cllr Jim Gildea said:

“It is a fitting way to mark the end of my term as Cathaoirleach to see Phase 1 of the Shanganagh Park Masterplan take shape. This project reflects our commitment to investing in community wellbeing, sport and biodiversity. I am particularly proud of the partnership with local clubs and the positive impact these new amenities will have on this growing community.”
