Sallynoggin Wall Transformed into Mural Celebrating Identity and Belonging
Over the past few weeks, Sallynoggin Youth and Senior Centre came alive with creativity and connection as community members collaborated to create a mural. This transformative artwork now brightens the shared space, reflecting the theme of identity and place. Organised and part-funded by Creative Ireland and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, the project invited participants to share stories and co-create the mural design. More than just an art project, it was a celebration of shared experiences, using creativity as a bridge to foster belonging, spark conversation, and reimagine the meaning of place.
Councillor, Jim Gildea, Cathaoirleach, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council highlighted:
“Creative Ireland's support brought a vibrant community engagement project to life in Sallynoggin, transforming a local wall into a powerful mural that now stands as a visual celebration of identity and place. This initiative had a profound impact, fostering dialogue and connection between community members. It empowered residents—young and old—to share their perspectives, reflect on what Sallynoggin means to them, and collaborate creatively. The result is more than just a mural; it's a testament to the strong sense of belonging nurtured by the Sallynoggin Youth and Senior Centre.”
Participants engaged in a consultation, a preparatory workshop and a survey led by a DLR Community Worker and a facilitator from The Walls Project. These sessions laid the foundation for meaningful collaboration for sharing ideas of identity and place. The initiative also explored the distinction between street art and graffiti, encouraging thoughtful dialogue about how each form influences public spaces and community perception.
Frank Curran, Chief Executive, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council added:
“The Community and Cultural Development Department, with support from the Creative Ireland Initiative, proudly unveiled a transformative community engagement project at the Sallynoggin Youth and Senior Centre. This vibrant initiative has reimagined the centre’s space, turning it into a brighter, more welcoming environment that reflects the energy of the local community. Through creative collaboration and intergenerational participation, the project has brought to life a mural that captures the essence of identity and place. It stands as a lasting symbol of the voices, stories, and spirit of Sallynoggin. I’m incredibly proud to witness the remarkable work led by the community now woven into the fabric of this space.”
Breda O’Brien, Centre Manager at Sallynoggin Youth and Senior Facility added - “It’s more than art—it’s a celebration of who we are.”
