Major milestone reached in the delivery of Cherrywood Town Centre and Environs
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council (dlr), in its role as both Planning Authority and Development Agency for the Cherrywood Strategic Development Zone (SDZ), has approved Amendment No. 11: Cherrywood Town Centre and Environs Review to the Cherrywood Planning Scheme 2014 (as amended), marking a significant step forward in the continued development of Cherrywood as a vibrant, sustainable and connected urban community.
The Amendment follows a comprehensive review undertaken by dlr to support the delivery of an attractive and thriving Town Centre. The broadening of land uses and an increased provision of approximately 2,000 homes will meet the needs of Cherrywood’s growing population of residents, workers, students, and visitors. The review process included extensive engagement with elected members, stakeholders, statutory bodies, and the wider community through two public consultation phases and a series of information and briefing sessions.
Councillor Barry Saul, An Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, said:
"The approval of Amendment No. 11 represents an important milestone in Cherrywood’s development and reflects the Council’s long-term vision for creating a vibrant town centre at the heart of this growing community. The Amendment will help support the delivery of a high-quality, sustainable and accessible urban environment, bringing lasting benefits for current and future residents, businesses and visitors, while further strengthening Cherrywood’s role as a key destination within the County."
The review process commenced in December 2024 and progressed through the statutory procedures set out under the Planning and Development Act, concluding at a Special Council Meeting on 4 June 2026. Following the statutory display period, no appeals were received and, as such, the Amendment is now in effect.
Frank Curran, Chief Executive of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, said:
"Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council plays a central role in planning and delivering sustainable towns and communities across the County. The approval of Amendment No. 11 demonstrates our ongoing commitment to guiding the growth of Cherrywood, ensuring that development is supported by a coherent plan-led approach that will support a vibrant and viable town centre with a mix of uses, community facilities and quality infrastructure. In essence, it will support our key vision for creating places where people can live, work, learn and thrive, and it is an important milestone in the history of Cherrywood."
The approval of Amendment No. 11 further reinforces dlr’s commitment to delivering a successful Town Centre and supporting the continued growth of Cherrywood as one of Ireland’s most significant emerging urban communities.
