Killiney Beach and Dún Laoghaire Harbour Rated ‘Clean to European Norms’ in IBAL Coastal Survey
August 2025 – The latest coastal survey by Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) has once again recognised Dún Laoghaire Harbour and Killiney Beach for their outstanding cleanliness and environmental standards, awarding both locations the top rating of ‘Clean to European Norms’.
In Dún Laoghaire, the survey praised the newly extended area from the East Pier to the Roger Casement Pier, highlighting its excellent maintenance, engaging marine-themed art, various signs relating to items of historical interest and the QR codes on the Big Belly Bins ' Get to know your Harbour'. The refreshed blue seating along the West Pier and the well-managed food kiosks contributed to the positive assessment, with only minor litter observed in isolated areas. The overall impression was of a large, well-cared-for harbour setting, fully deserving of the highest litter grade.
Killiney Beach, a Blue Flag site, was commended for its cleanliness and community involvement, notably the creative “Pick up your Dog’s Poo!” campaign by Rathmichael National School. Despite some graffiti in peripheral areas, the beach itself was found to be well-managed and free of significant litter.
Cllr Jim Gildea, Cathaoirleach, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council:
“We are proud that we have maintained high standards at both Dún Laoghaire Harbour and at Killiney Beach. We would like to especially thank the outdoor crews, who take pride in their work and play a vital role in keeping the area clean. Their dedication and hard work continue to make these public spaces a source of pride for the community. We would also like to acknowledge the work of Clean Coasts groups and other volunteers, whose efforts contribute to these results”.
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council continues to invest in facilities around beaches and coastal areas, including the recent installation of bin surrounds at Dún Laoghaire Harbour and the deployment of additional staff and bins at coastal locations during peak season. These measures reflect the Council’s ongoing commitment to providing clean, safe, and welcoming environments for both residents and visitors alike.
Watch out next month for the Big Beach Clean Up organised by An Taisce’s Clean Coasts, taking place from 19 – 21 September
