An Cathaoirleach, Cllr Jim Gildea, Dún Laoghaire‑Rathdown County Council, has officially launched a new exhibition at dlr LexIcon, exploring the lives and legacy of Joseph McGrath (1888–1966) and Thomas Cullen (1891–1926). The exhibition examines the pivotal roles both men played during the revolutionary period and the establishment of the Irish Free State between 1916 and 1924. Joseph McGrath was primarily active as a politician, while Thomas Cullen was a close associate of Michael Collins and a member of his security team, the Squad. Both men were members of the Anglo‑Irish Treaty Delegation and, in 1922, supported the newly formed Government, McGrath as a politician and Cullen as a member of the National Army.

To mark the digitisation of previously unpublished documents relating to both men, this exhibition brings material that had been held at Cabinteely House and unavailable to the public until now into the public domain. Using their personal papers alongside contemporary photographs, the exhibition offers insight into their contributions to the early years of the State.

The exhibition is now open until 19 April on Level 3, dlr LexIcon Library and Cultural Centre, Dún Laoghaire, and is free to attend.
