Have Your Say: Dún Laoghaire Seeks Purple Flag Status for Safer, More Vibrant Evenings

A major new survey campaign is underway in Dún Laoghaire as the town bids for Purple Flag Accreditation—an international mark of excellence awarded to towns and cities that offer a safe, welcoming, and vibrant night-time experience.

The initiative, led by the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Chamber of Commerce and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, invites local residents and businesses to share their views about the town’s evening atmosphere, safety, and social scene.

Two short surveys—one for residents, one for businesses—are now open and will close on Thursday, 31 July at 5:00 PM. QR code posters linking to the surveys are currently on display throughout the town and on the poster attached.

Colette O’Sullivan, CEO of DLR Chamber, spoke at the launch and outlined why community input is vital:

“Securing the Purple Flag would be a major step forward for Dún Laoghaire. But this is more than a title - It’s about shaping a Dún Laoghaire that feels alive, safe, and inclusive at night. Whether you live here or run a business, your voice matters. This survey gives our residents and businesses the chance to shape the kind of night-time economy they want to see"

Cllr Jim Gildea, An Cathaoirleach, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council added:

“Dún Laoghaire already offers so much— from our harbour, restaurants, cafes and bars to local culture and community spirit. The Purple Flag would put a stamp on what locals already know: this is a great place to spend time in the evenings.”

The campaign is supported by a broad coalition of local groups, including An Garda Síochána, the Dún Laoghaire Business Association, DLR Tidy Towns, residents' associations, and hospitality leaders. If successful, Dún Laoghaire will join other leading towns and cities across Ireland and the UK that have been recognised for their commitment to a safe and enjoyable night-time economy.

To take part, simply scan the QR codes on posters around the town or on the poster here and complete the survey before 5:00 PM on 31 July.
