Free sunscreen dispensers to be installed in public parks across Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has announced the roll-out of free sunscreen dispensers in key public parks across the county, supporting sun safety and helping to reduce the risk of skin cancer as more people enjoy time outdoors in the summer months.
The dispensers, which provide free SPF sunscreen at the point of need, will be installed in the Council’s main parks in the coming days. The initiative aims to make it easier for park users, particularly families, children, and outdoor workers, to follow sun protection guidance, even when sunscreen is forgotten or runs out.
Using sunscreen is one part of a broader approach to sun safety. The Council is encouraging everyone spending time outdoors to take simple precautions such as covering up, using an appropriate SPF, wearing a hat and sunglasses, seeking shade during the middle of the day, and reapplying sunscreen regularly, especially after sweating or towel-drying.
Install locations: Dispensers will be placed in the Council’s main public parks across the county, including:
- Cabinteely Park
- People’s Park, Dún Laoghaire
- Killiney Hill Park
- Fernhill Park
- Blackrock Park
- Marlay Park
- Shanganagh Park
Cllr Jim Gildea, Cathaoirleach, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, said:
“This initiative is about community wellbeing and prevention. Whether you’re bringing children to the playground, meeting friends for a walk, or spending an afternoon in the park, sun protection matters in Ireland too—even on bright, breezy days. These dispensers will help normalise sun safety and I’d encourage everyone to use them as part of a wider approach: seek shade, cover up, and reapply sunscreen regularly.”
Frank Curran, Chief Executive, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, said:
“Our parks are some of the most-used public spaces in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, particularly during the summer months. By installing free sunscreen dispensers in our main parks over the coming days, we’re making it that bit easier for people to protect themselves, especially when they’ve forgotten sunscreen or run out. It’s a simple, practical measure that supports healthier choices for everyone enjoying the outdoors.”
Kevin O’Hagan, Cancer Prevention Manager, Irish Cancer Society, said:
“Nearly nine in ten cases of skin cancer are caused by UV rays from the sun or sunbeds, so prevention is vital. We also know cost can be a real barrier; many people say sunscreen is too expensive. That’s why initiatives like this, which make sunscreen free and accessible in everyday outdoor settings, are so important. We welcome Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council’s action and encourage people to follow SunSmart habits: cover up, use sunscreen, seek shade, and protect your eyes.”
Bathing Areas: The Council will also be installing a small number of dispensers at selected bathing areas. Details of these locations will be confirmed soon.
