Dún Laoghaire is celebrating a major milestone as the town has been awarded Purple Flag accreditation for 2026, the first time it has received this internationally recognised honour. The Purple Flag celebrates towns and city centres that demonstrate excellence in creating a dynamic, safe and inclusive evening and night‑time economy.

Cllr Jim Gildea, An Cathaoirleach, Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council, said:

“This is a proud moment for Dún Laoghaire and for the wider county. Purple Flag status highlights not only the vibrancy of our town after dark, but also our collective commitment to safety, inclusivity, and community wellbeing. It sends a clear signal that Dún Laoghaire is open, welcoming and full of life.”

Similar to the Blue Flag for beaches, the Purple Flag is awarded to destinations that offer a high-quality mix of entertainment, dining, culture and hospitality between 5pm and 5am, while prioritising safety, accessibility and wellbeing for residents, visitors and local businesses. This achievement reflects a strong collaborative effort across the community, led by the Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Chamber of Commerce, Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council, An Garda Síochána, local businesses, hospitality venues, transport providers, residents’ associations, Tidy Towns volunteers, the Dún Laoghaire Business Association (DLBA), and community partners. Over an 18‑month planning and assessment period, these groups worked together to enhance and promote the town’s evening and night-time experience.

Frank Curran, Chief Executive, Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council, said:

“Purple Flag accreditation is a significant endorsement of the work underway across Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown to support vibrant, safe and sustainable town centres. It reflects the strong collaboration between the Council, local businesses, An Garda Síochána and community stakeholders, demonstrating what can be achieved when we work together to enhance the experience for residents, visitors and businesses alike. From its coastal walks and cultural venues to its cafés, restaurants, pubs, festivals and year‑round events, Dún Laoghaire continues to develop as a welcoming, vibrant and well‑managed destination that balances activity with safety, stewardship and quality of life”.

Colette O’Sullivan, CEO, Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Chamber of Commerce, said:
“This accreditation is a testament to the incredible collaboration across our business and community networks. Purple Flag is about more than nightlife — it’s about creating a place where people feel confident, comfortable and excited to spend time in the evening. From hospitality and culture to transport and safety partners, everyone has played a role. We are immensely proud to see Dún Laoghaire flying the Purple Flag and building a stronger, more vibrant night-time economy for 2026 and beyond. We also look forward to securing the same for other towns in this great county of ours.”

The Purple Flag programme assesses destinations across several key criteria, including:

  • Safety and wellbeing
  • Movement and accessibility
  • Diversity of offer and experiences
  • Strong partnership working
  • Positive perceptions and footfall.

In Dún Laoghaire, initiatives such as enhanced stewardship, improved safety coordination, business engagement, cultural programming and community‑led supports have strengthened the town’s reputation as a safe, vibrant and enjoyable evening destination.

The Purple Flag will now fly proudly in the town centre, signalling to residents, visitors and investors that Dún Laoghaire is a place to enjoy confidently after dark, and showcasing the town’s commitment to delivering a thriving, inclusive and well‑managed night-time economy.
