An Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Lettie McCarthy, has launched a new book and accompanying exhibition in dlr LexIcon, Level 3, running until the 9th of February 2022.

Shifting Foundations – The Big Houses of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown explores the history of some of the big houses of the county including the three houses that are managed by dlr County Council at Marlay, Cabinteely and Fernhill. Edited by the dlr Historian in Residence, David Gunning, contributors to the book include Peter Pearson, Rob Goodbody, Georgina Sweetnam, Nicola Kelly and Dr. Deirdre Raftery.

At the launch, An Cathaoirleach said:

What’s clear from the book and exhibition is that the county had more than its fair share of big houses, maritime mansions, and coastal villas, and that many great houses in the area still stand, albeit in more built up areas. The publication shows that there are many avenues of investigation and research which remains to be done on individual properties. I think this book and display sheds a new light on the big houses of our county, particularly during the revolutionary era, and enhances the existing interpretation of these properties.

The book and exhibition are two elements of a larger Decade of Centenaries programme supported by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council via dlr Heritage, and funded by the Dept. of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media.

The book is available to buy at Dubray Books, Dún Laoghaire or dlr LexIcon for €15.00.
