Open Call for Exhibitions Municipal Gallery, dlr LexIcon 2027, 2028 and 2029

We invite professional artists to apply for the Visual Art Commission exhibition in the Municipal Gallery, dlr LexIcon. This opportunity is for an artist to create new work specifically for the Municipal Gallery. These exhibitions are funded by the Arts Council and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.

The Open Call is an opportunity to apply for an exhibition of work which you have already created – the work does not have to be created especially for dlr LexIcon. The work you submit in your application must be new to the audience in Dublin and the general M50 area (for example North Wicklow, South Dublin, Fingal, Kildare). It should have been created within the last five years and should not be older work. If your work has been shown in a commercial gallery anywhere (rather than a public gallery), then you may submit it.

We will select three exhibitions, one for each year from 2027- 2029. Each exhibition will run for eight to ten weeks. The exhibition dates will be agreed with the selected artists, we will look at the overall Gallery Programme when deciding the dates. One exhibition opportunity will be for an emerging artist.

If you are selected, you will receive:

  • A fee for you as the artist - €6,500 for established artists / €4,300 for emerging artists.
  • An exhibition at the Municipal Gallery, dlr LexIcon, Dún Laoghaire.

How to decide if you are an Established or an Emerging Artist
  • Established Artist

You will have been working professionally for several years, with a strong track record of exhibitions, awards, or recognition. Your work may be widely known, and you sell and/or exhibit your work regularly. You may be represented by a gallery.

  • Emerging Artist

You are at an early stage in your professional career as an artist. You may have some experience showing your work, however you are still developing your practice and building a reputation in the art world.

How will we select the artists?

The applications will be assessed in two stages in a competitive selection process. This means that applications are marked in comparison to each other. We will use the same Scoring System for Stage One and Stage Two.

  • In Stage One, a group of independent art experts, who do not work in the Arts Office, will review your application. This group includes working artists. A shortlist of all applications that receive over 70 marks out of 100 in this assessment will move on to stage Two. We will not consider applications that receive less than 70 marks.
  • In Stage Two, the Arts Office team will assess the shortlisted applications. We will mark them and the highest scoring ones will be selected. The minimum mark required at Stage Two is 80 out of 100. We will keep a list of all the shortlisted applications that score over 80 marks at Stage Two for two years. We will use this list to select more exhibitions if we receive more funding. We will start with the applicant who has the highest score. The decision of the selection panel will be final and will be based on the scoring system that is outlined below. If no application reaches the minimum marks, we will not choose an exhibition from this process. We will then use a different selection process instead.

We care about your feedback. Have your say.
