Update: Hawks Cliff Swimming Area to Remain Closed as Repair Works Continue

We have engaged Cunningham Civil Marine Ltd to carry out upgrade and repair works at the Hawks Cliff swimming area.

Works will continue from 24 July and will include the installation of new handrails and ladders at the swimming platform.

Unfortunately, additional damage has been caused to the handrail due to unauthorised access along the walkway between the Éire sign and the bathing area. As a result, further repairs are now required, including resurfacing the path and replacing 32 metres of damaged handrail.

We understand that many people are eager to return to swimming at Hawks Cliff. However, the site remains an active construction area and public access is not permitted while works are ongoing, as it could put both visitors and workers at risk.

We appreciate your patience and understanding while these important works are completed and apologise for any inconvenience caused.

The area will remain closed from the pedestrian bridge for the duration of the works.

We will continue to provide updates on our website and social media channels, including details on when the area will reopen.

We also operate a zero-tolerance policy towards the harassment of staff and contractors, including the use of abusive or threatening language. Violence, threats of violence and damage to Council property are unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Original news story 17 July 2026 - Hawks Cliff swimming area works recommencing Monday 20 July

Works are due to continue at Hawks Cliff Swimming Place (Vico Baths) from Monday, 20 July.

These works will include installing new handrails and ladders at the swimming platform level.
 

Repairs will also be made to the walkway leading from the Eire sign area to the swimming platform, including resurfacing the path and replacing broken handrails.

For public safety, Hawk’s Cliff Swimming area will be closed for the full duration of the works. Access to the Éire Sign grass area will remain open. We ask all visitors to please respect the fencing, barriers, and safety signage in place.
