Think Twice. Think Bike.

Dún Laoghaire‑Rathdown County Council, in partnership with An Garda Síochána and in collaboration with South Dublin County Council, Fingal County Council, Meath County Council, Wicklow County Council and Dublin City Council, has launched a region‑wide road safety campaign focusing on motorcycle safety entitled “Think Twice, Think Bike.”

The “Think Twice, Think Bike” campaign is a high‑profile multi‑agency initiative aimed at raising awareness of motorcycle safety as the summer riding season gets underway and increasing numbers of motorcyclists take to the roads. The campaign will be promoted through a combination of radio, digital and social media channels across the Eastern region.

Motorcyclists are among the most vulnerable road users, and while many collisions occur through no fault of the rider, the lack of physical protection means that the consequences can be particularly severe. The campaign encourages both riders and drivers to reflect on their behaviour, slow down, stay alert and share the road safely. According to the RSA there were 30 Motorcycle fatalities on Irish roads in 2025, compared to 17 in 2024 an increase of over 76%.

Speaking at the launch, Gerry Flaherty, Road Safety Engineer with Dún Laoghaire‑Rathdown County Council, said:

“Every motorcyclist who sets out on a journey has people at home expecting them to return safely. This campaign is about reminding riders that while motorcycling can be enjoyable, it also comes with increased risk. Even where a motorcyclist has done nothing wrong, their vulnerability means the consequences of a collision can be life‑changing. Taking care on the road can make the difference between getting home safely and serious injury.”

The campaign also highlights the shared responsibility of all road users. Drivers are being reminded to actively look out for motorcycles, particularly at junctions, during overtaking manoeuvres and when changing lanes. An Garda Síochána is supporting the campaign through road safety messaging and enforcement activities, reinforcing the importance of safe speeds, sober driving, and full compliance with the Rules of the Road.

Inspector Michael Houlihan, Garda National Roads Policing Bureau said  “An Garda Síochána are delighted to work alongside and support the Eastern Region Local Authorities in the launch of this very important multi-agency road safety campaign designed towards promoting the safe and enjoyable use of Motorcycles on our roads, whilst at the same time advising other road users to remember that there will be an increased number of Motorcyclists on our roads over the summer period and to take additional extra care when turning at junctions or entering onto a roadway.  We are urging all drivers over this Bank Holiday weekend and summer period to slow down and be aware of your surroundings at all times”.

An Garda Síochána fully participates in delivering BikeSafe programmes at various locations throughout the country. This road safety initiative includes video pre-learning, a Motorcycle safety/skills theory, classroom-based workshop, and an observed ride led by Advanced Garda Motorcyclists and is free of charge.

The “Think Twice, Think Bike” campaign promotes practical safety reminders for motorcyclists, including:

  • Taking time to refresh riding skills after a break from riding
  • Ensuring motorcycles are in a safe and roadworthy condition
  • Wearing appropriate protective clothing and safety gear
  • Riding within speed limits and adapting to road and weather conditions
  • Staying alert to changes in traffic layouts and road environments

The local authorities involved are urging all road users to take personal responsibility for safety and to support the campaign’s core message.
