Sod Turned at Emmet Gardens in Clonskeagh
Today, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council marked a significant milestone in the delivery of new homes with the official sod-turning ceremony for Emmet Gardens in Clonskeagh. An Cathaoirleach, Cllr Barry Saul, was joined by Minister for Housing James Browne TD and Chief Executive Frank Curran to officially mark the start of works on the new development, which will deliver 129 social and affordable homes on Council-owned land in partnership with Winterbrook Ltd.
Cllr Barry Saul, Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, said:
“Turning the sod at Emmet Gardens today is an important moment as we move forward with the delivery of 129 new homes in Clonskeagh. These homes will provide new opportunities for individuals and families to put down roots and become part of the local community.
A significant amount of work has gone into bringing the project to this stage, and I want to acknowledge the commitment of the Elected Members, Housing staff and all those involved. I look forward to seeing construction progress and, in time, welcoming new residents as they make Emmet Gardens their home.”
Frank Curran, Chief Executive of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, said:
“Emmet Gardens is a strong example of how we can make effective use of Council-owned land to deliver high-quality social and affordable homes in areas where they are needed. Working in partnership and using innovative approaches to housing delivery allows us to progress ambitious projects such as this and turn plans into homes and communities.
Our focus is not only on delivering homes, but on creating well-designed, sustainable places where people can enjoy a high quality of life. With more than 1,000 housing units currently progressing through various stages of the Council’s project pipeline, we remain firmly focused on maintaining that momentum and increasing the supply of social and affordable housing across the county.”
Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD, said:
“Today marks an important milestone for the Emmet Gardens development, and I am pleased to be here to see construction commence on a project that will deliver 129 much-needed social and affordable homes in Clonskeagh.
With substantial support from my Department, this development will provide high-quality, energy-efficient homes that people can afford, while creating a vibrant, sustainable and well-connected community in an excellent location with access to public transport, services and amenities.
We are now delivering more social and affordable homes than at any other time in the history of the State, and I am determined to ensure that this momentum continues.
Projects such as Emmet Gardens are vital to sustaining and building on that progress. They demonstrate what can be achieved when local authorities, Government and delivery partners work together with a shared ambition to increase housing supply and meet the needs of communities.
I am refusing to stand still - we have to keep up the urgency and keep getting shovels in the ground. I want to see even more projects of this scale and ambition brought forward in every part of the country.”
Minister of State for Planning and Local Government, John Cummins TD, commented:
“I commend Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council for working in partnership to break ground on this site today. I’m working to ensure our local authorities and planning system have the resources they need to deliver homes like Emmet Gardens - in the right places and with the right facilities to ultimately build stronger communities. I’m looking forward to returning when it’s complete and to see people move into their new homes.”
Conor Rhatigan, Managing Director of Winterbrook Ltd., said:
"We are delighted to be marking this milestone at Emmet Gardens. There has been a lot of work behind the scenes to get the project to this stage, so it’s very rewarding for everyone involved to now see construction underway and these new homes beginning to take shape.
We recognise the scale of the housing need in Ireland, and it’s positive to see Government funding and policy helping to bring projects like this forward. We’ve worked closely with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council throughout and there has been a real shared focus on getting the project delivered.
At Winterbrook, we want to continue building on this. We’re ambitious about growing the business and delivering more homes, both in partnership with Local Authorities and through our wider development pipeline. Emmet Gardens is an important project for us and one we’re very proud to be delivering."
The project is funded by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, with additional support from the Housing Agency through the Land Acquisition Fund.
