Smart Technology to Shape the Future of Tree Management in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council (dlr) has become the first local authority in Ireland to use artificial intelligence (AI) and LiDAR technology to create a detailed digital twin of its street tree network. As part of a pilot project taking place this September, approximately 20,000 street trees will be surveyed across the county, with around 10,000 trees assessed on each side of the county. Using advanced AI and LiDAR technology, the project will generate valuable data to support smarter urban forest management, strengthen climate resilience and help safeguard one of dlr's most important natural assets for future generations.

Using advanced AI and LiDAR technology, the surveys can collect and analyse information about individual trees more efficiently than traditional methods. The technology creates a digital twin of each tree, capturing more than 70 data points on its condition, structure and surrounding environment. This data will support smart urban forest management, providing valuable insights to guide future tree planting, maintenance and climate resilience programmes.

The initiative forms part of dlr's ongoing commitment to protecting and enhancing the county's green infrastructure and biodiversity. Trees play a vital role in improving air quality, storing carbon, reducing urban heat, supporting wildlife and creating attractive places for people to live, work and visit.

The survey findings will help identify trends, monitor tree health and resilience, and inform future investment in tree planting and maintenance. The data will also support the Council's efforts to increase canopy cover and ensure the long-term sustainability of the county's urban forest.
