Real-Time Noise Monitoring Goes Live Across Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has launched a new network of eight real-time environmental noise monitors across the county, improving public access to local noise information.
The monitors, commissioned in September 2026, have been installed in areas identified in the Round 4 Noise Action Plan as Priority Important Areas. These are locations where a significant number of people may be exposed to higher levels of environmental noise, particularly from major transport sources such as roads and rail. The new monitoring network will provide live information on sound levels in the vicinity of each monitoring location, helping residents, communities and decision-makers better understand local environmental noise conditions.
Environmental noise is recognised as an important quality-of-life issue, and long-term exposure to elevated noise levels can affect wellbeing. The monitoring network forms part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to implementing the Dublin Agglomeration Noise Action Plan 2024-2028, which was prepared jointly by the local authorities of the Dublin Agglomeration and informed by Strategic Noise Maps prepared in 2022. The Noise Action Plan sets out measures to address priorities identified through noise mapping and to support the protection of quieter areas.
Through the new online platform, members of the public can view current sound level data from each of the eight monitoring stations. The data will also assist the Council in tracking noise trends over time, identifying areas where further assessment may be required, and informing future policy, planning and environmental management decisions.
The eight monitoring locations are:
- Ballyogan Crescent, Ballyogan
- Ballyogan Road, Ballyogan
- Belmont Grove, Stillorgan Road
- Bishop St, Cherrywood
- Carysfort Avenue, Blackrock
- Kilcross Drive, Sandyford
- Mountain View, Shankill
- St Columbanus Place, Windy Arbour
The Council welcomes public engagement with the network and encourages residents to explore the information available through the portal. While environmental noise can vary depending on location, time of day, weather, traffic patterns and other local factors, the monitoring network provides a valuable insight into noise levels across key areas of the county.
