New Exhibition Celebrates 10,000 Years of Greek and Irish Maritime Tradition
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, in partnership with the Embassy of Greece in Ireland, has opened "10,000 Years of Greek and Irish Maritime Tradition", a new exhibition exploring the rich maritime heritage of two nations shaped by the sea.
Launching at dlr LexIcon, Dún Laoghaire, the exhibition has been developed as part of the Communicating Europe Initiative 2026 and the Ireland-Greece local authority programme. Bringing together material from leading maritime museums and cultural institutions in Ireland and Greece, it highlights the enduring connections between the two countries through trade, exploration, migration, shipbuilding and seafaring traditions.
Drawing on collections from organisations including the Hellenic Maritime Museum, the Maritime Museum of Crete, the Georgios Averof Floating Naval Museum, the Museum of Hydra and the National Maritime Museum of Ireland, the exhibition traces maritime history from prehistoric voyages to modern shipping and coastal life.
Visitors will discover stories of ancient trade, traditional boatbuilding, epic voyages, cultural exchange, wartime experiences and the continuing importance of the sea to both Greek and Irish communities.
Launching the exhibition, An Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Cllr Barry Saul, said:
“Dún Laoghaire is defined by the sea, and this exhibition offers a wonderful opportunity to explore our shared maritime connection with Greece. We are proud to welcome it to dlr LexIcon and strengthen the cultural links between our countries.”
Frank Curran, Chief Executive of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, added:
“This exhibition reflects the Council’s commitment to international collaboration, cultural engagement and lifelong learning. We are delighted to support this partnership and welcome visitors from across the county and beyond.”
Alongside the exhibition, dlr Libraries will also run a programme of associated public events, including talks, family activities and educational programmes inspired by the themes of maritime heritage, cultural exchange and European connections.
The exhibition will remain on display at dlr LexIcon until 29 November 2026 and admission is free.
