New awareness campaign shows real-life consequences of illegal parking
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has launched a new parking awareness video highlighting the real and often overlooked challenges caused by illegal and inconsiderate parking. The video demonstrates how blocked footpaths, obstructed access points and misuse of disabled parking bays impact people with disabilities, older residents, and parents with prams/buggies.
Speaking in the video, An Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Jim Gildea, said:
“Illegal parking isn’t just a nuisance; it’s a barrier that prevents people from safely using our footpaths and roads. It creates real hazards for other road users, including pedestrians, wheelchair users, cyclists and motorists. We all have a responsibility to park considerately and ensure our public spaces remain accessible for everyone.”
Featuring lived experiences from members of the community, alongside perspectives from An Garda Síochána, dlr Traffic Wardens and Council representatives, the video aims to build understanding and promote more responsible parking behaviour across the county.
Frank Curran, Chief Executive, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, emphasised the need for a collective approach:
“By showing consideration for others and making small changes to how and where we park, we can make a big difference. Together, through education, enforcement and collaboration, we are working to make Dún Laoghaire‑Rathdown safer and more accessible for all road and footpath users.”
Duncan Byrne, dlr staff member, shared his experience:
“I’ve encountered situations where a car is parked partially or fully on the path. In those situations, I’ve had to backtrack to a safe place to cross where there’s either a dip or a pedestrian crossing. If there isn’t a dip, I have to push myself off the kerb — which can mean I may fall out of the chair onto the road.”
Aoife McCoy Moran, member of the Disability Consultation Group, explained how vehicles parking too close to or over the hatched lines beside a disabled bay can prevent her from getting her wheelchair out of the car.
Key messages: Please park responsibly, keep footpaths clear and help protect accessibility for everyone.
Remember: double yellow lines aren’t just for decoration.
