New Accessible Boating Service Launches at Dún Laoghaire Harbour

Ireland's first electric wheelchair-accessible boating service has been launched at Dún Laoghaire Harbour, marking a significant step forward in making maritime activities accessible to all. Boathub will enable wheelchair users and people with disabilities to experience the freedom and enjoyment of being on the water through a range of inclusive, bookable boating activities in Ireland's largest recreational harbour. 

Officially launched by Cllr Barry Saul, Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Boathub represents a major milestone in making life on the water more accessible. The service is centred on an electric Wheelyboat V20, the first electrically powered wheelchair-accessible vessel of its kind in Ireland, and will offer free, bookable harbour trips, fishing experiences and boating activities. 

Boathub was made possible through the support of Green Kite and Community Foundation Ireland, whose partnership and commitment to accessibility and inclusion have helped bring this unique project to life. The initiative represents a significant step forward in ensuring that more people can experience and enjoy the recreational, social and wellbeing benefits of being on the water.

Launching the service, Cllr Barry Saul, Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council said:

"Boathub is about opening up new opportunities for people to enjoy being on the water and experience Dún Laoghaire Harbour in a way that may not have been possible before. This initiative will help ensure that people of all abilities can participate in maritime activities, connect with the harbour and enjoy the many wellbeing benefits that come from spending time outdoors."
