Walkers along the East Pier can now enjoy a live weather data display housed in a historic weather station.

The innovative East Pier Anemometer, with its spinning cups to measure wind speed and direction, was installed in the 1850s. Its mechanism has been carefully restored by the dlr Harbour Team.

The new digital screen displaying live weather data is a collaboration between Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and the Cruising Association of Ireland. The screen provides up-to-date information on wind speed and direction, tides, sea and air temperature, as well as information on the ships in the bay.

The historic structure forms part of the award-winning Dún Laoghaire Harbour Heritage Trail developed by the Tourism and Heritage Teams of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council.

An Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Cllr Barry Saul, said:

"It is fantastic to see the anemometer restored and live weather data on display again, it will only add to the experience of those enjoying a walk on the magnificent and ever popular East Pier."

Chief Executive of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Frank Curran, added:

''Collaborations such as these are an important part of the Council's work and we applaud the Cruising Association of Ireland for their work on this project to make information about our bay available to the public.''
