Urgent Appeal from dlr and BirdWatch Ireland
10 July 2020
Dalkey Island
People are Accidentally Trampling Tern Nests on Dalkey Island
Terns, a protected species, are nesting on Dalkey Island. BirdWatch Ireland has erected fencing around the breeding areas to protect these birds as their eggs and chicks are difficult to see and easily trampled under foot. Please do not cross the fencing and please do not bring your dogs to the island as it is prohibited.
Over the last couple of months people have been seen on the colony and several nests have been accidentally trampled on. If the fencing has been blown down by the wind, please note that the birds are still present with chicks and eggs and do not enter the colony. This is of critical importance.
Lamb Island also remains closed to the public for the season.
