Public Notices

Due to huge demand we have decided to launch a third Couch To 2k Programme starting Monday, 8th June. Registration is now open. Book early as we imagine this programme will get booked up quickly!

Taking up jogging can seem like a daunting prospect, especially if you feel out of shape or unfit. The Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Sports Partnership Team will help you work towards moving from walking to jogging your 2 kilometres in just 4 weeks starting the 8th June.

What is a Couch to 2K?

Whether you've never jogged before or if you just want to get more active, Couch to 2K is a FREE and easy way of getting more energy and healthier in your local area. Under the restrictions of Covid-19, and the current 5 kilometre exercise limit, we don’t want you jogging in circles and decided that we would break it down to achievable targets. This is for everyone who would like to get from walking to jogging but might be a little unsure on how to get started. Sometimes we are all very enthusiastic at the start and we can overdo it, feel defeated and give up when we are just getting going. This programme works because it starts with a mix of walking and jogging to gradually build up your fitness & stamina.

How will it work?

Firstly, you just sign up through our Eventbrite link here: https://couchto2kprog3.eventbrite.ie

We will then contact you by email with all the details. Each Sunday evening you will be sent the training plan for the week. We will also send you a warm up, cool down exercises and tips. We will check in with you to see how you are getting on and we are always available to answers any queries you have at any time.

What is the training Plan?

The plan involves 3 sessions of mixing brisk walking with jogging each week, with a day of rest in between. There is a different schedule each week building up your fitness and stamina to complete the end goal of reaching a 2K as per the plan. We will send that on to you every week with exactly what you will have to do.

What are the benefits?

There are plenty of benefits from getting into jogging. For starters, it’s an easy way of improving your physical health.  It requires little equipment, but a good pair of runners will help improve comfort and foot support.

Jogging regularly will improve the health of your heart and lungs. It can also help you lose weight, especially if combined with a healthy diet. There's evidence it may help increase bone density in some people, which can protect against bone diseases like osteoporosis.

There are also mental benefits of exercising outdoors. Taking on the challenge of Couch to 2K can help boost your confidence and self-belief, as you prove to yourself that you can set yourself a target and achieve a goal.  Exercising regularly through activities like jogging can also be a great stress reliever and has even been shown to help combat depression.

*If returning to exercise or have any concerns about your health, please contact your GP before starting this programme.

*Please ensure to keep to your 5km local area and social distancing is always adhered to*
