Councillor Mary Hanafin, Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, and His Excellency Lahcen Mahraoui, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco, held an event in the Assembly Hall, County Hall, Dún Laoghaire, to highlight the achievements of four women from Ireland and Morocco.

Following International Women’s Day on Wednesday 8th March, An Cathaoirleach and the Moroccan Ambassador agreed to hold an event to showcase the achievements of a number of women from Ireland and Morocco.

Speaking at the event, Councillor Mary Hanafin, Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council said:

“It is important that we showcase the achievements of women from around the world and from a variety of different fields. It is my hope that today’s event will encourage and inspire the young women attending to go out and pursue any subject or career that interests them.”

His Excellency, Ambassador Lahcen Mahraoui said:

“It was wonderful to be able to hear stories, testimonies, and experiences from renowned Moroccan and Irish female figures, known for their great achievements.

I would like to really thank our guests from Morocco and from Ireland for accepting, with great delight and enthusiasm, to celebrate with us, here in Dún Laoghaire, International Women’s Day for the year 2023.”

The women invited to discuss their achievements were Mrs. Bouchra Baibanou, a renowned champion alpinist in Africa and the Arab world, Sinead Buckley-Quinn, local entrepreneur and owner of the Irish Design Gallery in Dún Laoghaire, Professor Rajaa Cherkaroui El Moursli, a renowned scientist, specialising in the area of nuclear physics and Doctor Eimear O’Connor, Director of the Tyrone Guthrie Arts Centre and an Art Historian.

The event was attended by local Councillors, students from St. Joseph’s Cluny, Coláiste Íosagáin, Loreto Dalkey, Loreto Foxrock, Holy Child Killiney and Dominican College, Sion Hill, along with a number of guests of An Cathaoirleach and His Excellency, Lahcen Mahraoui.

A presentation was made to each of the women on behalf of An Cathaoirleach and the Ambasssador in recognition of their achievements.
