At the launch of the first Dublin Climate Action Week on Monday 13th September 2021, Tom McHugh, dlr interim Chief Executive, said local authorities in Dublin and across Ireland were continuing to respond to and adapt to the needs of local communities. In addition, Minister Eamon Ryan TD also stated that, local authorities and communities were critical to addressing the crises of climate, biodiversity and pollution. dlr is delighted to announce that it has partnered with Shankill Action for a Green Earth (SAGE) - Sustainable Energy Community (SEC), to provide bridge financing, to support the preparation of a comprehensive Energy Master Plan (EMP) for the area.

The completed EMP will include a Register of Opportunities, which is a range of projects that the SEC could move forward with into the future. Justin Kilcullen, Chairperson of Shankill Action for a Green Earth (SAGE) has stated, ‘

We are delighted that our working relationship with Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council has been strengthened through this new partnership. Our ambition is to become one of Ireland's first energy saving suburbs. We will achieve this by working with our resident's associations, sports clubs, churches, schools and other community organisations, to identify opportunities to save energy in our homes and community facilities. The preparation of our Energy Master Plan, with the active and financial support of SEAI and dlr, will be the first significant step on our journey to be a true Sustainable Energy Community’.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council Director of Infrastructure & Climate Change, Robert Burns said:

As part of our participation in Dublin Climate Action Week 2021, we are delighted to announce our partnership with Shankill Action for a Green Earth (SAGE) - Sustainable Energy Community, in preparing their Energy Master Plan. dlr and every local authority in Ireland, has a crucial role to play in both mainstreaming climate action across our own services and functions, both also in encouraging and demonstrating climate leadership across our local communities. I wish to acknowledge the ongoing action and commitment of SAGE and look forward to the progress we can make together in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in our County’.

The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) is the national co-ordinator for the Sustainable Energy Communities (SEC) programme, which currently consists of over 400 communities around Ireland, who are interested in community energy. Under this network, groups of people can come together to improve how energy is used for the benefit of their community. They look at how to use energy in a sustainable, holistic way. Energy communities often look at projects in homes, transport and local business. They also look at community buildings such as schools, community centres, and sports facilities. Codema is the regional co-ordinator for the Sustainable Energy Community (SEC) network in the Dublin & Mid-East Region. This region is made up of over 110 Sustainable Energy Communities in the local authority areas of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, Dublin City, Fingal, South Dublin, Wicklow, Kildare and Meath.
