Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council (dlr) to support Earth Hour 2022

The Earth Hour campaign was initiated by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and partners as a symbolic ‘lights-out’ event in 2007, held in Sydney. Earth Hour is now one of the world's largest grassroots movements for the environment. Held every year on the last Saturday of March, Earth Hour engages millions of people in more than 180 countries and territories, by switching off their lights to show support for the planet and the environment. 

The Council will also align its efforts in conjunction with other local organisations such as Codema – Dublin’s Energy Agency and the Dublin Climate Action Regional Office (CARO).  The Council will also be switching off lights at County Hall and dlr Lexicon, in line with relevant health and safety protocols and procedures. 

Speaking of Earth Hour 2022, An Cathaoirleach, Cllr Lettie McCarthy said: ‘By switching off our lights across the County for one hour on Saturday 26th March, we will be joining with many other homes and organisations across Ireland and the world, in showing solidarity for our planet and the environment. Earth Hour is another reminder of the need for continued local and community led efforts in taking climate action, together. I encourage all dlr citizens and families to come together to take part in Earth Hour, and to continue to discuss energy and climate change in our homes and local communities.’

Michael Mangan, Acting Director of Infrastructure & Climate Change, said: ‘By taking part in Earth Hour 2022, the Council is again demonstrating its ongoing commitment to leading on climate action at the local level. The Council has recently published the second Annual Progress Report for its Climate Change Action Plan 2019-2024, which is available to read HERE. The Council continues to achieve energy efficiency and emission reductions across its own buildings, facilities, functions and services, and influence climate action in the wider community.  These efforts were recognised by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, awarding dlr with the top prize of ‘Energy Team of the Year’ at the 2021 SEAI Energy Awards’.
