Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council to fund School Cycle Parking
Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council is delighted to announce that funding is being made available to provide cycle parking to primary schools in the County. Schools are required to apply to the Council and outline what they are doing to promote cycling to pupils in their school. A review will be made of all applications and the cycle parking will supplied to the successful schools. All primary schools in the County have been notified of the initiative. In addition to the provision of school cycle parking, the Council intends rolling out more cycle parking stands around the County in 2020. About 400 cycle parking spaces installed in 2019.
An Cathaoirleach Cllr Shay Brennan, who is a Council Cycling Champion, welcomed the continued provision of cycle parking to schools and stated, “I welcome this initiative and hope it will encourage more pupils to cycle to school. I am also looking forward to seeing some schools in the County commencing a Cycling Bus or a Walking Bus in 2020, following the issuing of guidelines to schools”.
Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council actively promotes cycling as a safe healthy travel mode and is currently developing a number of cycling infrastructure schemes on key corridors in the County. The Council also supports the delivery of cycle training to 5th and 6th class students as part of the Cycle Right cycle training programme developed by the Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport with about 1500 pupils trained each year in the County.
