Council encourages schools to apply for cycle and scooter parking

Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council is delighted to announce that funding has been allocated by the National Transport Authority to provide cycle parking and scooter parking to schools. All schools in the County are required to apply to the Council for the cycle parking and/or scooter parking and outline what they are doing to promote cycling on the journey to and from school. All primary, secondary and special needs schools in the County have been notified of the initiative and the deadline for applications is 12th March 2021. In 2020, 190 cycle stands were supplied to 25 schools around the County.

In addition this, the Council is rolling out cycle parking at high demand  locations around the County and is continuing to support the provision of cycle training to 5th and 6th classes in schools as part of the Department of Transport Cycle Right programme (www.cycleright.ie).

An Cathaoirleach Cllr Una Power stated,

I welcome this initiative from the Council to supply cycle and scooter parking to schools and I hope this will encourage more children, to cycle to school. I also welcome the recent allocation of €34million of funding from the National Transport Authority for the devotement of Active Travel Schemes and the enhancement of cycle infrastructure.

Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council actively promotes cycling as a safe, healthy, and environmental friendly travel mode and is currently developing a significant number of cycling infrastructure schemes in the County as part of the National Transport Authority Sustainable Transport Measures Grants (STMG) Programme 2021.
