Climate heroes clean-up at the Tidy Districts Awards!

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council held their annual Tidy Districts awards ceremony on Wednesday, 11 September 2019. The competition offers the Council an opportunity to recognise and reward the efforts made by residents’ associations and tidy towns groups to enhance their local environment. In this, the 27th year of the competition, a total of thirty prizes were awarded to residents’ associations and tidy towns groups. The total prize fund for this year’s competition was €8,800!

While the competition is primarily an anti-litter and anti-graffiti competition, it has evolved over the years and now considers biodiversity, ecological projects and community engagement. This year, a new climate change category was added. This category seeks to encourage and reward positive climate action.

Speaking at the ceremony An Cathaoirleach, Councillor Shay Brennan, said 

The reality of record breaking temperatures, extreme weather and air pollution may seem like a daunting task to tackle but many community groups, such as those represented in this competition, show imagination and leadership in response to a changing climate. The key to reversing the devastating aspects of climate change is action. The Tidy Districts competition represents the successful teamwork that exists between the Council and the local communities we serve. By continuing to work in partnership, we can join forces for a greener future‘.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council announced Shankill Tidy Towns as the overall winner of the Tidy Districts 2019. Shankill Tidy Towns are a dedicated and enthusiastic team of volunteers, who were recognised for their outstanding anti-graffiti and anti-litter actions. The group also demonstrate a dedication to environmental protection and have recently implemented a new hand weeding policy at road edges and paving. Through their inspiring ‘Trees for All’ project, they have planted over 16,500 trees and have worked closely with the Council, Coillte, and Crann - Trees for Ireland. Shankill Tidy Towns have recently launched a tree public awareness campaign and have already planted 1,000 Birch, Alder, Oak, Rowan, Pine and Hawthorn trees so far this year. Mr. Michael Mangan, Director of Infrastructure and Climate Change, said ‘the Tidy Districts competition provides the Council with an opportunity to formally recognise and reward the hard working residents’ associations and tidy towns groups who take an active interest in their local environment. I want to congratulate and thank every group involved in this competition.’
