Writing Memoir with Liz McManus and Patsy Murphy

Join Liz McManus and Patsy Murphy and learn how to approach memoir as a writing form. The session will include overview of the genre, where to begin and end, research involved, example of memoir and discussion of participants’ ideas. Suggested reads include Memoir by John McGahern and Are You Somebody? by Nuala O'Faolain
Born in Canada 1947, Liz McManus has worked as an architect and a newspaper columnist, as well as being a parliamentarian for 19 years. Liz’s first novel Acts of Subversion (1991) was shortlisted for the Aer Lingus/ Irish Times award for New Writing. During her writing career, she has been awarded a Hennessy New Irish Writing award, Listowel Short Story award and Irish PEN award. Former chairperson of the Board of the Irish Writers Centre, Liz is currently a Board member of Irish PEN/PEN Na hEireann.
Born 1941 in England but spent early childhood in Dublin with her grandfather. She returned to Dublin in 1960, studying Anglo Irish Literature in UCD. Patsy has worked in the drama department, RTE and as a lecturer Letterkenny, DIT, and the Atlantic Technological College and Galway. She was a Fulbright Scholar in New York and other work includes journalism and script writing.
