A  Foxrock Local History talk: The Arrival of Electricity to Deansgrange by Michael Hughes
Event Description

One hundred years ago, work began on the first major project in the Irish Free State - the development of an electrical generation and distribution system by the German firm Siemens-Schuckert. The Deansgrange area was placed as the centre for distributing electrical energy from the Shannon Hydro Scheme to homes and businesses in South County Dublin. As the Clonkeen area developed, promotion of electrical appliances and ‘electric homes’ also took place. These links, still in existence today, will be discussed by Michael J. Hughes, a member of the Foxrock Local History Club.

In 1967, at the age of 15, Michael J. Hughes began his career in ESB as an apprentice electrician. As a young electrician he was part of the technical team that maintained the original ESB 38kV transformer station No.1 at Clonkeen Road, Deansgrange. The ESB centenary will take place in May 2027.
