Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS) 2027
The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has announced funding under the Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS) 2027.
The scheme provides financial assistance to owners of:
- Protected Structures; and/or
- buildings located within an Architectural Conservation Area (ACA).
Funding is available for conservation and repair works that help protect the historic character of these buildings.
The scheme supports good conservation practice by funding repairs to historic buildings, encouraging the use of traditional materials, and ensuring that any new work respects the building's character while allowing it to remain functional.
BHIS Grant Amounts
Grants are available from €2,500 to €50,000.
Please note: BHIS is a competitive grant scheme with limited funding available. Successful applicants may receive less than the amount requested.

Only fully completed applications, including all required supporting documents, will be considered.
BHIS Assessment Criteria
Applications will be assessed based on:
- The significance of the structure
- The effectiveness of the proposed works
- The quality of the proposed works
- The contribution the project will make to public amenity
BHIS Method Statement Requirement
A Method Statement must be included with your application. This statement must be prepared by a suitably qualified conservation professional and explain in detail how the conservation or repair works will be carried out.
Only fully completed applications including all necessary documentation will be accepted.
BHIS Funding Conditions
The total amount of public funding received for a project, including funding from other public bodies or government departments, cannot exceed 80% of the total project cost.

Historic Structures Fund (HSF) 2027
The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has announced funding under the Historic Structures Fund (HSF) 2027. The primary focus of the HSF is to assist the conservation and enhancement of historic structures and buildings for the broader benefit of communities and the public through investing essential capital in our valuable built heritage and helping the owners and custodians of historic structures to safeguard them into the future for the benefit of communities and the public.
HSF Project Priorities
Projects must demonstrate either:
- A clear community or public benefit; or
- A clear residential benefit (projects must have progressed through the relevant planning process, where required).
Owners of Protected Structures seeking funding for smaller scale works, or where there is no community or public benefit, are advised to apply under the BHIS scheme.
HSF Grant Amounts
Grants are available from €50,000 to €200,000.
The scheme is intended to support larger-scale enhancement, refurbishment or reuse projects involving heritage structures where:
HSF Who Can Apply?
The Historic Structures Fund provides capital funding for works to qualifying structures which include the following:
- Protected Structures included in the Record of Protected Structures (RPS).
- Structures eligible, or proposed, for inclusion in the RPS, but not yet formally approved for inclusion. Such structures must meet the criteria for inclusion in the RPS, ie. must be of of special architectural, historical, archaeological, artistic, cultural, scientific, social or technical interest.
- Structures or works within Architectural Conservation Areas (ACAs), or within the setting of a National Monument, where exceptional circumstances apply.
HSF Eligible Projects
Applications may be submitted for:
- Historic structures in private ownership or custodianship, where the owner or custodian is seeking funding for conservation works.
- Historic structures in public ownership, where the project demonstrates a clear heritage focus and provides a community or public benefit.
HSF Important Information
- Only one HSF application per historic structure will be considered.
- Owners of Protected Structures seeking funding for smaller scale works, or where there is no community or public benefit, are advised to apply under the BHIS scheme.
- Local Authorities may nominate a maximum of three private projects and three publicly owned projects for funding consideration.
