Transforming Dundrum

Improving bus services and making way for public space.

What?
A new one-way, bus-only road is being built to connect Sweetmount Avenue to Main Street. This Bus Gate will improve bus services, and a new bus stop will be added on the Dundrum bypass. There will be no impact on existing bus stops or on car circulation. The existing bus layover spaces on Waldemar Terrace will be redistributed to nearby agreed locations.

When?
Following consultation in 2025, work on this project is due to be completed in 2027.
 

A new destination and congregation space. 

What? 
A significant new public realm is planned for the areas east and north of Waldemar Terrace, which serves as a new gateway to Dundrum Village. Rebalancing the village by delivering a civic space, including landscaping, planting, seating and natural play. This is being enabled through the relocation of the bus layover. 

When? 
Designs are currently being developed for this space and will be shared in 2026 for feedback as part of a public consultation. 

Why? 
This will become a new destination and public space, welcoming people into the town and consolidating Dundrum as a place to visit, meet and gather. 
 

A Living Streets Project for Dundrum.

What? 
This project will make permanent the street layout introduced during Covid-19, including public amenities, infrastructure improvements and enhanced active travel options. Temporary fixtures will be replaced with quality landscaping including new paving, planting and seating. 
 
When? 
Designs are being developed for this project and will be shared later in 2026 as part of a public consultation. 
 
Why? 
This will deliver a high-quality, welcoming urban centre for Dundrum, with accessibility and sustainability at the heart of the project, improving Main Street for residents, visitors and businesses alike. 

Connection and cohesion.

What? 
An update and redesign of Taney Junction, reducing the footprint of the junction and reducing wait times for pedestrian crossings. 
 
When? 
A public consultation will be held in 2027. 
 
Why? 
This key intersection will become more attractive and easier to navigate for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users. It will provide better connectivity and cohesion between Dundrum Village to the north and south of the junction. 

A safer, more connected network.

What? 
A number of options are being explored at the Sandyford Road/Overend Way junction and Dundrum Bypass to improve and upgrade infrastructure. This will include measures to improve traffic circulation, better pedestrian crossings and signals, and new cycle lanes. 
 
When? 
Public consultation will progress on this project after the construction of village upgrades to Main Street and Sandyford Road. 
 
Why? 
This will ensure all sections work together as a safer, more connected route for pedestrians and cyclists, while allowing traffic to move through the area.
