In 2023, Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council adopted a new Local Area Plan (LAP) for Dundrum. This aligns with a number of other policies including the County Development Plan and the national Climate Action Plan. To deliver on the objectives of the LAP several key projects were identified for Dundrum focused on creating enhanced streetscapes and neighbourhoods.

Dún Laoghaire County Council is now progressing a number of these plans in parallel, contextualised below under the headings unlock, reconnect, and enhance.

Site1: Unlock

Site 1 is a large area located under the Luas bridge which is currently used for bus layover facilities. Relocating the bus facilities to alternative locations will unlock this area for public realm improvements

Site 1

To enable the relocation of bus layover facilities and make Site 1 available for public realm improvements, a bus gate — a road section restricted to buses — is needed off the Dundrum Bypass. This would provide a bus-only connection between Main Street and Sweetmount Avenue.

Site 2: Reconnect

Site 2 is the Taney Cross junction. The current layout of this junction prioritises car use and bisects the north and south of Dundrum Village. Reconnecting these spaces by reducing both the overall junction footprint, and pedestrian crossing times, will encourage more sustainable modes of transport, while reuniting the village with an inviting public realm.

Site 3: Enhance: Living Streets Dundrum

Site 3 is the current Dundrum Village Main Street, which was upgraded in response to Covid 19. Temporary materials were used to facilitate this upgrade. This new Living Streets scheme proposes to reinvigorate the public realm with amenities, planting, and sustainable urban drainage systems, using permanent materials. Like other Living Streets schemes in nearby Blackrock and Dún Laoghaire, Living Streets Dundrum will reinforce the Main Street as an attractive and vibrant destination.

As part of this ‘Enhance’ scheme it is proposed to review the Dundrum bypass as well as the junctions at Sandyford Road / Overend Way and the Wyckham Roundabout. By considering the overall area and context of these new sites, a holistic plan for Dundrum can be prepared that ensures the projects are integrated providing the greatest benefit to the Village as a whole.
