Sandycove Beach
Sandycove beach is a small beach which offers shallow water to paddle and views to admire. This seaside suburb is located around a pleasant harbour. Sandycove has a famous Martello Tower where the writer James Joyce once stayed for a week as a guest of poet Oliver St. John Gogarty. It is next to the traditional Irish bathing place, the Forty Foot, where brave bathers swim all year round.
Facilities / Public Conveniences and General information for your visit
- Transport: Sandycove and Glasthule DART Station is located 1 kilometre from the beach. The DART services all station northward to Dublin city and south towards Bray and Greystones. Check train times at Irish rail website: https://www.irishrail.ie/en-ie. Cycling stands are available nearby for those travelling by bicycle.
- Water quality: Sandycove Beach is a Designated Bathing Area. Inside of bathing season samples are taken weekly, and outside of bathing season every other week. - Lifeguard: Sandycove has lifeguards during Bathing Season 1st June to 31st August (as resources allow) and lifeguards are present every day. This location is lifeguarded 12pm to 6pm weekdays and 11am to 6pm on weekends and bank holidays. Lifeguards are only present for the first 2 weekends in September. Public toilets: Toilets are provided 200m from the beach at the junction of Sandycove point and Sandycove Avenue East. There is a superloo toilet facility is 100m from the beach on Sandycove Avenue West. Opening hours are as follows:
- Nov/Dec/Jan/Feb - Opening times 7:30am to 9:00am. Closing between 4:30pm and 5:30pm
- Mar/Apr/Sep/Oct - Opening times 7:30am to 9:00am. Closing between 6:00pm and 7:30pm
- May/June/July/Aug - Opening times 7:30am to 9:00am. Closes between 9:00pm and 10:00pm
- Bye laws – Dogs and other animals are not allowed in the bathing area at any time. Outside Bathing Area from 10.00 am to 7.00 pm - dogs must be on a leash all year round.
