Nature and Place is a strand of commissions which started in 2023, concentrating on climate change and the environment in the forests of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown. This new strand has a focus on water. We are asking artists to concentrate on the lower Shanganagh River and the nearby coast around Shanganagh Park, including the shoreline in Shankill. We are particularly interested in projects that explore connections between land, water, climate and community across this landscape.

Artists should be interested in working with scientific or environmental experts connected to the area or to the themes of the project. For example, climate adaptation, biodiversity, water quality or coastal ecology. Proposals should show clearly how relevant scientific or environmental knowledge will inform the work and how they intend to approach this. We would like artists to create events and experiences that local communities and regular users of the area can actively take part in.

Climate change is already affecting how we experience and understand these environments. Flooding, sea level rise, erosion, changes in water quality, habitat loss, and extreme weather all shape how these places function and how people relate to them. Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council’s Climate Action Plan 2024–2029 identifies Flood Resilience, Nature Based Solutions and Citizen Engagement as key themes. For this project, the geographical focus is the lower Shanganagh River and the adjoining coastal area, including the shoreline around Shanganagh Park and extending south along the coast towards Shankill. The wider Carrickmines / Shanganagh river system flows through this area and meets the coastline along the boundary between Shankill and Killiney.
