Twist and Shout, is an exhibition of new artworks by Róisín Lewis. The exhibition opens at the Municipal Gallery, dlr LexIcon, Dún Laoghaire, on Sunday 6 September and runs until Sunday 1 November 2026. Admission is free.
The works in this exhibition evolve from Lewis's bicycle journeys through the Irish landscape. During the summer, she records her observations of wildflowers and grasses while cycling through coastal landscapes, naming each species aloud as she passes. The exhibition brings together Lewis's experiments in representing data, movement and memory as part of her artistic process. The work is funded by the Arts Council as a DLR Visual Arts Commission, and supported by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.
During the summer, Róisín records her observations of wildflowers and grasses while cycling through coastal landscapes, naming each species aloud as she passes. Listening back to these recordings, Lewis became interested in the physical and mental effort involved in cycling and recalling plant names, particularly their scientific and Irish titles. In the studio, she transcribed the recordings. Working with transparent watercolours, she recreated her experience of light and colour on backroads filled with fuchsia, montbretia, loosestrife, willowherb and meadowsweet.
Róisín has also been exploring textiles made from montbretia, dandelion and bindweed fibres using traditional techniques of twisting, looping and weaving. These slow, repetitive processes mirror the rhythms of the body moving through the landscape. Her drawing process is inspired by experiments with circular looped structures.
