At May’s Council meeting, Councillors representing Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council unanimously agreed to adopt a Climate Change Action Plan.

Developed in partnership with the four Dublin Local Authorities and Codema, the Dublin Energy Efficiency

Agency, the plan seeks to adapt to and mitigate against the negative impacts of climate change, and

will focus on five key areas: Energy and Buildings; Transport; Flood Resilience; Nature-Based Solutions;

and Resource Management.

An additional €150,000 has been committed from the Council’s 2019 budget to support the delivery of

this plan, which aims to: improve energy efficiency in Council buildings; facilitate the transition to more

sustainable modes of transport; protect infrastructure; safeguard our natural heritage; and improve

resource efficiency.

Our Climate Change Action Plan sets out specific actions and targets, which will see the Council

reducing our energy usage and choosing more sustainable options, resulting in a reduction in

greenhouse gas emissions. We also aim to help influence a reduction in emissions in the wider county

by working in partnership with local communities, businesses and national government.

The actions outlined in the Climate Change Action Plan will be continually monitored by a dedicated

cross-departmental climate action team working in partnership with the newly established Climate Action

Regional Office.

During May’s Council meeting Councillors also unanimously declared a Biodiversity and Climate

Change emergency, making Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council only the second local authority in

Ireland, after Wicklow County Council, to do so.

Key targets:

Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030.
A 33% improvement in energy efficiency by 2020.
Make Dublin a climate-resilient region by reducing the impact of future climate-related events.
To actively engage and inform citizens on climate change.
Decarbonise the Council fleet and make sustainable modes of transport more attractive.
Cross-boundary flood-management programmes.
Protect and enhance biodiversity and ecosystems.
